It’s difficult to draw the line between how dominant the Ravens defense was and how terrible the Browns offense played Monday night. But either way, the Ravens defense was definitely effective. The Ravens posted their ninth shutout since 2000 -- the most of any NFL team -- but first since Nov. 26, 2006, when they manhandled the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After plodding through the first half of a “Monday Night Football” matchup, the Ravens burst out to a 16-0 victory over the Cleveland Browns in only five minutes.
There can be no sugar-coating what happened yesterday at Paul Brown Stadium. A superior first-place football team, the Cincinnati Bengals, easily defeated an inconsistent team with a .500 record -- the Ravens. The winners were better on offense, better on defense, better in the kicking game, and much sharper at the outset. They jumped ahead early, never looked back, and left the Ravens in a precarious state.
Ravens safety Ed Reed totaled five tackles last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he wishes he could have netted three more. Three times, Reed failed to fully wrap up his man and the one-armed tackles were broken up. It was a stark contrast to the de-cleating blow he dealt to Denver Broncos running back Knowshon Moreno two weeks ago, something for which he is much better known.
With a chance to knock the Ravens out of contention in the AFC North, the Cincinnati Bengals delivered on Sunday. In front of hostile crowd at Paul Brown Stadium, the Ravens were simply overmatched in every aspect of their 17-7 loss.
There were few bright spots in the Ravens’ 17-7 loss to the Bengals Sunday, but Lardarius Webb was definitely one of them. Given his first chance in an extended role at cornerback, Webb played a large part in patching up Baltimore’s pass defense. And in the process, Webb made a bid for keeping a starting spot.
